 | Bayonne - Community Profile the 11th largest city in New Jersey. Minutes from Manhattan.
Bayonne (pop. approx 62,000) is a peninsula city surrounded by water - on the west by Newark Bay and on the east by New York Harbor. Located at the southernmost tip of the New Jersey Hudson River Goldcoast facing New York City across New York Harbor.
Bayonne is directly accessible from the south from Staten Island via the Bayonne Bridge, from the west via I95/I78 via the New Jersey Turnpike at Exit 14a, and from the north from Jersey City/Hoboken via the Turnpike Extension or Route 440 or Kennedy Boulevard. Less than 5 miles to Newark International Airport.
Currently, Bayonne is undergoing a re-development real estate boom anchored by new and planned residential and commercial developments on both the Newark Bay and New York Harbor sides of the city and a renewed interest since the extension of the Hudson-Bergen Light Railwhich has three stations in Bayonne and connects north to Jersey City (Exchange Place, Pavonia/Newport), Hoboken and Weehawken (Lincoln Harbor and Port Imperial).
Bayonne's housing inventory is predominately older single and multi-family housing. A boom in condo and townhome construction which began in 2003 will add several thousand new residents to the City which is also means additional services (movie theatre, super stores, etc.) and jobs.
Known for its quiet, family atmosphere, Bayonne's 5.6 square miles has a more residential environment when compared to the dense urban Hudson River Goldcoast towns to the north like Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, West New York, Union City, Guttenberg, Cliffside Park, Edgewater, and Fort Lee.
